“The Big Dig” at Willow Run continues! This major infrastructure project is the first step to restoring full utility services to the building.
When the main portion of the original facility was demolished, it left our preserved portion with no utilities. Basic services such as permanent electricity and lighting, a heating system, a fire suppression system, potable water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater services need to be restored.
We are currently doing the trenching work necessary to bring these critical utilities back to the building.
Digging a Trench 5 1/2 Football Fields Long for Utilities
Unlike hooking up a new home in a residential area, the nearest electrical and gas lines to the Bomber Plant are more than 2000 feet away from the building. To put this in perspective, that’s the length of 5½ football fields. So when we call this “The Big Dig,” we really mean it!
We’re Still Raising Funds to Keep Digging
We estimate the total cost of this year’s “Big Dig” to be between $1.2 and $1.5 million, of which we still need to raise $400,000. The great news is that several generous companies and organizations have stepped forward to donate pro-bono materials and construction services to help make it happen, and much of the work is already underway. But, we still need cash donations to complete the job.
Beyond the Dig —Your Support is Still Needed to Turn Willow Run Into a Museum
To date we have raised $8 million in contributions through cash donations, pro-bono services, in-kind gifts of materials and longer term pledges. Over the next four years we will still need an estimated $10 -$12 million to complete the construction project and move the Yankee Air Museum into the Bomber Plant building. That’s a lot of money, but a significant portion of it can (and hopefully will) come from companies making gifts of products and/or services, and many companies have already stepped forward. Construction Materials and Services Needed!
We also are looking for companies and contractors to help us. The most important in-kind gifts of goods and services that we will need in the near future are listed below:
- Underground systems including water and sewer pipes, electrical conduits and gas main: Much of this work is simply excavating, but we also need help with piping and valves for these systems.
- Leveling the interior floor: We will need to add approximately 6 inches of concrete over 144,000 square feet of floor space.
- Planning and installation of an interior fire suppression system
- Relocation and installation of parking lot lights and flag poles
- Interior painting: Donations of paint are being sought, but we also need painting contractors to share the load of painting the big doors, interior walls and ceiling.
- Heating and cooling systems
