Rosie Honors Edsel Ford

Our Willow Run Rosies will be paying their respects at the final resting place of Edsel B. Ford, who led the push to build the Willow Run Bomber Plant to produce airplanes using assembly line production process pioneered by Detroit automakers. Edsel Ford, who died in 1943, did not live to see victory in WWII. But he lived long enough to see mighty Willow Run begin producing B-24 bombers on an assembly line! Afterwards, the Rosies will head to the DIA visit the famous Detroit Industry murals by Diego Rivera. Stop by one or both locations to say hello!

Detroit Airlines and Aviation Collectibles Show / Annual Bomber Buffing at Yankee Air Museum

Come on out for the Annual Bomber Buffing party, and join other volunteers in polishing up the Yankee Lady B-17 and the Yankee Warrior B-25 to get them ready for the flying season. BONUS: This year, Bomber Buffing coincides with the FIRST ANNUAL Detroit Aviation and Airlines Collectibles Show, being held the same day at Willow Run Airport.  Admission to the Show is FREE for “bomber buffers,” and $5 for all others at the door. Yankee Doodle Dandy C-47 Skytrain rides will be offered at special rates all day, with a drawing for a FREE C-47 “Start-up and Taxi” for one lucky winner. John Borling on how poetry helped him survive as a POW at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton.” Save The Bomber Plant Campaign’s “tribute” Rosie the Riveters will be in attendance at our booth, along with Yankee Air Museum staff and volunteers.

This is not a Save The Bomber Plant campaign event, but we are sharing it with our supporters because the Ypsilanti Community Choir will be performing their original composition about the Plant called “Liberator.” Our “Tribute Rosies” will be attending the performance, so be sure to say hi, and come out to support your community’s musicians and honor our veterans!

Commemorating the anniversary of an October, 1940 meeting in Detroit at which the U.S. Government and the American auto industry began organizing for war production, this conference will put the Willow Run Bomber Plant into its larger historical context as a a critically important part of the Arsenal of Democracy. Speaking will be Yankee Air Museum Board Member and Historian Randy Hotton. The event is FREE, and registration is not necessary, just come on out!
